The species was officially published in 1985 by Miloslav Stunicka under the name Pinguicula rotundiflora.Pinguicula rotundiflora can be found in nature near Minas de Asbesto at Jaumave, Tamaulipas and several locations in Nuevo Leon, both in Mexico.It grows both on calcareous soil and gypsum soils, at altitudes between 1300 m and 2200 m.
