Pinguicula moctezumae, Rio Moctezuma

Pinguicula moctezumae is famous for its long, narrow, grass-like leaves that form a shimmering crown of dewy ribbons, topped with exceptionally large, vibrant flowers.

Pinguicula moctezumae was discovered in 1994 during the investigations of possible ecological impact of the future building of the Zimapan dam on the Moctezuma canyon. The species distribution is endemic and limited to Rio Moctezuma, state of Hidalgo and state of Queretaro. Rio Moctezumae is the frontier between Queretaro state and Hidalgo State, not far from the city of San Joaquin, Municipality of Cadereyta.

Pinguicula moctezumae is named after Moctezuma II, latinized Montezuma, who was the last emperor of the Aztecs, and was defeated, captured and murdered by the Spanish.

Pinguicula moctezumae breaks the traditional mold of flat-hugging butterworts with its long, narrow foliage. This spectacular species grows fine, ribbon-like leaves that radiate outward and upward, creating a stunning, architectural starburst shape.

The bright green leaves are completely covered in sticky, shimmering glands that catch fungus gnats with incredible efficiency. Unlike many other species, P. moctezumae retains its long carnivorous leaves throughout most of the year if kept warm and humid. When it blooms, it produces exceptionally large, deep violet-pink flowers with a bright white center, creating a spectacular display.
