Herbaceous perennial, native to Europe.

In the wild it grows on forest edges and clearings. Prefers moist, well drained soil on limestone.

Grows well in shady places and under trees, but also in full sun and will self seed on limestone gravel containing surfaces that are moist enough and not trampeled too much.
