Sarracenia rubra subsp. gulfensis Summary

Sarracenia rubra subsp. gulfensis

Sarracenia rubra subsp. gulfensis is a fast grower with a beautiful red flower and exquistie red veining inside the pitcher mouths. The leaves are slender, upright, not too tall (around 50 cm to 60 cm), don't fall to the sides, and last well into the winter. If you're looking for a pitcher plant for a gift that needs to be 'carnivorous and leafy', this is the one I'd recommend. I've grown this plant since the early 2000s, so there's a large stock and because of this the plant gets overlooked - don't we all percieve as valuable that which is rare? This overlooking is really unjust, because the plant genuinly is beautiful. Of all the rubras, this one has the biggest red flower, and it smells as sweet as a rubra flower should. The fact that it grows fast is more than likely the result of its success at catching flies, wasps and othe flying insects.

Sarracenia rubra subsp. gulfensis is a close relative of the type subspecies. It was given subspecies status by Don Schnell to denote the S. rubra subsp. rubra plants found immediately along the Florida Gulf Coast (Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton Co). It is a bog plant, that can sometimes be seen growing on floating vegetation.

Sarracenia rubra subsp. gulfensis is part of the S. rubra complex. Taxonomy of this complex is rather is rather complicated. Currently, there are six subspecies, their relationships and taxonomic level are described differently by different authors. Personally I think Barry Rice makes a good point grouping the taxons correspondingly to river catchments in which they occur. However the final word would of course be a genetic analysis.

- S. rubra subsp. rubra
- S. rubra subsp. jonesii [=S. jonesii]
- S. rubra subsp. gulfensis
- S. rubra subsp. viatorum- S. rubra subsp. alabamensis [=S. alabamensis]
- S. rubra subsp. wherryi [=S. alabamensis subsp. wherryi]

The range of the S. rubra complex extends from southern Mississippi, through southern Alabama, the Florida panhandle and Georgia, to the coastal plains of North Carolina and South Carolina.
Sarracenia rubra is generally smaller and narrower than most species, usually not exceeding 65 cm in height. Sarracenia rubra is generally clump-forming.

We offer plants of two sizes, both have already flowered:
- L size plants with 1 large growing point and with several side-shoots
- XL size, 2 or 3 large growing points and many side shoots.
